Sarah is an artist based in St Leonards on Sea in East Sussex. She graduated with a Fine Art degree in painting from Southampton Institute and later graduated with a Masters in Sequential Design and Illustration from Brighton University.
Sarah’s paintings are energetic, bursting with colour and gestural line work. The paintings are richly layered, scratch marks revealing hidden tones and hints of colour. The compositions are a balance of busy layered areas contrasting with fine lines and markings
‘I like to reveal a little slice of the process by scratching and sanding down areas of layered paint. I love the sense of history a peeling painted door or weathered wooden fishing boat. I try and recreate a flavour of that in my work, this is in contrast with fresh blocks of colour and line work to balance the composition, creating a playful, fun aesthetic.
Sarah also creates drawings and collage which also bring a sense of fun and frivolity to her portfolio. Here we can see how she captures characters from a simple thumb print or brings life to imagined creatures found at the bottom of the garden. Her colour palette and line work connecting the two styles of work, and if you look carefully enough, the playful characters can be detected in her abstract work too.
Sarah has exhibited in Hastings, Brighton, London, and Barcelona.
